Sun and Hot Weather Policy
During club hours, children have unrestricted outdoor play access, exposing them to the sun. Sunburn poses risks to children's skin both short and long-term. To safeguard against sun damage, team members must take precautions from May to September and on unusually hot days year-round.
In high temperatures, measures should be taken indoors and outdoors to prevent heat stress or exhaustion, especially for vulnerable children. The Manager will adhere to local authority and health organisation guidance during Amber or Red Heatwave Alerts. They will ensure clubs have necessary resources for risk minimisation.
Protective Measures:
Parents are asked to apply sun cream in the morning; reapplication then takes place at after-school and holiday clubs.
Children apply their own sun cream in the club; assistance will be provided if necessary. The team will remind children to reapply at regular intervals.
In the club, we will provide suncream for all children to use - Ultrasun Kids SPF50+. Parents are also able to provide suncream for their children in a clearly named bottle if they want to use their own or if the child is allergic to the brand we use.
Children are encouraged to wear sun hats and play in shaded areas.
The team will be vigilant for signs of sunburn or heat-related illness and will make necessary adjustments.
Children will have breaks from the sun and activities will be adjusted to include more indoor activities.
Mechanical fans will be provided if needed.
Water is always freely available, but the children will be reminded to drink even more regularly.
Awareness and protection for team members against sun and heat effects.
Heat Stroke Management:
Recognise signs of heat exhaustion and provide first aid: shade, water, rest.
Call emergency services for signs of heatstroke; administer first aid until help arrives.
This policy ensures children's well-being during sun exposure and hot weather, aligning with statutory early years guidelines.
